Thomas Pinn was born at Sidbury, Devon on 22 March 1865 and enlisted as Stoker Class II on 7 December 1886. Advanced Stoker with Minotaur he joined the crew of the survey vessel Rambler on 28 October 1899 to undertake surveying work of the Cape of Good Hope Station. He briefly served in the rank of Leading Stoker Class II during this time but returned to the rank of Stoker before the end of the posting. Pinn was discharged ashore on 8 September 1904.
