Good Afternoon Everyone.......

I am looking at a medal awarded to 210 Gunner J. Brewer, Natal Field Artillery. The bars on the medal are as follows Tugela Heights / Transvaal / Laing's Nek.....

This is the first medal that I have seen that has TUGELA HEIGHTS and is not with the RELIEF OF LADYSMITH...... Of course every reference book states that the bar TH cannot be issued as a single bar and is with the RoL....... I checked my catalogue to see if I had any others that did not have this pair, every on that had TH had RoL…..

I am just wondering about my man.... Is he entitled to the RoL and is this an error on the medal roll..... When I look at the FMP entry for him he is listed as having the three bars as listed above..... I know that FMP is not completely accurate but it makes you think..... I do not have Ancestry but I did try to find him during the free period with no luck..... I guess that since he was in a SA unit his papers would not be in TNA.....

His FMP, entry had WO100/260 Page 1 and WO100.363 page 167 and does anyone have copies of these medal rolls or are they on line…..

I have added some pictures so you can see the rivets which look good to me…..

Any comments greatly appreciated…..

Mike

Page 1 of WO100/260 indeed shows your man as being entitled to Transvaal, Tugela Heights and Laing's Nek. Roll marginal note says "discharged". His place in the column for RofL is just marked with a dot. However, I am puzzled by your referring to WO100/363 page 167 - which is a KSA roll and that page refers to Marshall's Horse. I suppose his missing out on RofL could just be an error
These rolls are available on this site under Research.

IL.

This was the information I got from Find My Past......

I guess it is an error that he should have gotten the RoL bar......

Thanks Again

I think that is a particularly nice and scarce medal, I am not sure it is an error, if it is, then it is not a unique one, a quick glance at the same page in WO100/260 shows 196 Gummer C Atkinson with the same clasps, WO100/363 page 167 does indeed confirm Brewer was discharged upon the 10th of October 1900 as shown.

Great to see my work being discussed by knowledgeable peers.

Thanks Frank for pointing that WO100-363p167 is indeed for the NFA and not Marshall's Horse.

As to the dot on the QSA roll - if you look at the whole page you will see that every clasp/recipient intersect is either marked with a dot or "yes". This makes it quite clear that Brewer is not missing "RoL" according to the clerk who compiled the roll and everyone who cross-checked his entry. So, the medal is as issued. Gnr 196 Atkinson has the same entitlement, evidence of confusion as to the entitlement criteria.

But, as Mike points out he should have got the RoL clasp according to the clasp criteria.

A very fine medal - good luck Mike.

PS
I am working on adding medal roll images to my medal roll index.
