Something for the medal men.

On the morning of the 3rd of August 1901, Maj. General Sir William Forbes Catacre (1843-1906) wrote from his Eastern Districts HQ in Colchester (Near Port Elizabeth) a hasty note to O.C. Pov. Battn.

Please say names of 2 men for medals tomorrow & which Regiments they have served.
(Signed Catacre)

The recipient responded with 3 names:
Colour Sgt Monument, 2nd Norfolk Regiment, Private A. Bloom of same and Private W. Sicely of 1st Suffolk Regiment.

Sicely is mentioned on this website with the correct unit, Monument and Bloom are for some reason not.

A pencil note on the reverse identifies the recipient as one Colonel Norton. I couldn’t find a Colonel with that surname having served in the ABW. There was a Captain Alfred Edward Marston Norton (DSO) of the South Australia Contingent who served in the Cape and was promoted to Lt. Colonel during WW1.

205 Colour Sergeant William Monument served in the 2nd Norfolks during the early part of the ABW. Unfortunately I could not find his attestation papers & service records but in 1901 he was awarded his Long Service & Good Conduct Medal. The 2nd Norfolk QSA Medal Roll shows he earned the Paardeburg & Relief of Kimberley clasps before being invalided home on 23 June 1900! There are no other Monuments on the medal roll which is undated but must have been drawn up after August 1901.

A 297 Private A Bloom served in the 2nd Norfolks but he never went to South Africa. After 6 years in the “E Indies” he sat the ABW out on home service and was discharged in 1903 with only the Long Service & Good Conduct Medal to his name. His attestation papers, service records and discharge papers can be found on Find My Past. He was born in Norwich but his discharge papers show he intended to live in Colchester (England) once discharged.

The 2nd Norfolks QSA Medal Roll does list 737 Private R Bloom who earned the Paaderburg and Cape Colony Clasps. He was wounded at Karee Siding on 29 March 1900 and went back to England for discharge on 11 January 1901! Again I could find no attestation papers or service records for him.
