Louis Wilfred Palmer was born at Tetbury, Gloucestershire, the son of Robert and Annie Palmer in January 1879. Educated at the Boys National school in Tetbury, he was a carpenter when he enlisted in the Seaforth Highlanders on 4 April 1900 subsequently transferring to the 4th Battalion, Rifle Brigade. The Rifle Brigade arrived in South Africa in early 1902 and was involved in operations in the Orange River Colony, particularly around Harrismith, contributing to successful 'drives' by holding blockhouse lines.

Palmer died of enteric fever on 13 June 1902 at Kroonstad South Africa. He is honoured with a brass plaque in the Cathedral Chapter House under the east window of the school hall, 'In honor of Louis Wilfred Palmer (late a scholar of this school) who died of Enteric fever in South Africa June 13th, 1902, aged 23 years'.
