Good Afternoon Everyone......

My final medal for 2021

I have just rec'd a Q.S.A. that has me puzzled.....

Named: 8701 PTE. J. HAWKER, K.R.R.C., Relief of Kimberly, Paardeberg, Driefontein, Transvaal

According to Find My Past 8704 Private J. Hawker was a member of the 4th Battalion, King's Royal Rifle Corps (No Bars Shown), was Wounded on 31st March 1900 at Koornspruit (SFF Casualty Roll by Palmer states location as Sanna's Post)..... In the unit information as shown herein it states that the 4th Battalion did not arrive South Africa until the 25th of December 1901 is also stated as Wounded at Sannah;s Post)......

I am sure that the man 8701 and 8704 are the same man and there is an error in the naming which happens quite often......

I have checked the Medals to the K.R.R.C. thread in the forum and there are no other medals with this combination of bars......

Could he have been a Batman / Servant to an officer already serving in SA.....

Many Questions......

Any help will be greatly appreciated......

Mike
Your man is on page 382 of WO100/196 (as 8701) under 4th Bn, KRRC and QSA bearing clasps RofK/Paar/Dreif/Transvaal. Roll signed by CO of 1st Bn., Mounted Infantry. I would not think he was an officer's servant as about thirty all ranks of 4KRRC were entitled to the RofK clasp. He was a member of an MI Coy; Vol.IV. of the KRRC Annals mentions that a Bn. of MI was attached to each of the Cavalry Brigades and 4th BN., KRRC contributed a Section under Capt. Dewar. However not much more is shown about them.
A nice medal.
Best regards
IL.

Now that is a great medal for your final purchase for the year. Only one of thirty!:

I'm still waiting for my last purchases from City Coins.
ETA this month apparently.

Hello Mike
Happy New Year to you.
IMHO.....right man......slight error on regimental number.
There is a K S A out there somewhere?

Sanna's Post (a.k.a. Korn Spruit)

As per I L' s post it is very possible your man was attached to one of the mounted regiments mentioned below.

On 30 March 1900 a 2,000-man Boer force led by Christiaan De Wet advanced in the direction of Bloemfontein. Reconnaissance indicated the presence of a small garrison of British troops at Sanna’s Post, 23 miles east of Bloemfontein, which held Bloemfontein's water works. A British mounted force under Brigadier General Robert George Broadwood which had earlier attacked other Boer positions at Thaba 'Nchu, was withdrawing there. Broadwood's force consisted of Q and U Batteries of the Royal Horse Artillery, a composite regiment of the Life Guards, the 10th Hussars, the Royal Irish Regiment,  the New Zealand and Burma Mounted Infantry, and Roberts's Horse and Rimington's Guides (which were light horse units raised from English-speaking South Africans). De Wet sent 1600 of his men under his brother Piet to attack Broadwood from the north, while he himself occupied Sanna's Post to intercept their retreat.
You only live once, but if you do it right, once is enough.
Best regards,
Dave

A very nice medal to the KRRC with unusual clasps for that unit, Mike.
