From yesterday's DNW auction.

[ QSA ]
KSA (2) (6283 Corpl: W. Cragg. Rl: Dublin Fus:)

W. Cragg served with the Royal Dublin Fusiliers in South Africa during the Boer War, and was taken Prisoner of War at Chieveley on 15 November 1899, when the armoured train that they were in was ambushed and several carriages derailed. Approximately 43 men from the Royal Dublin Fusiliers, and 12 men from the Durban Light Infantry were taken Prisoner that day.

Cragg was held at Waterval Farm prisoner of war camp, and was released on 6 June 1900, when the camp was liberated by a Squadron of the 2nd Dragoons (Royal Scots Greys) commanded by Captain F. S. Maude.

Sold for a hammer price of £750. Totals (inc VAT on the commission for the UK only): £966. R19,200. Au$1,660. Can$1,610. US$1,290.

I have not traced him on the Boer War rolls.

Mmm, QSA (4) CC OFS Tr SA01 listed there. I guess he renamed whether he could find. A shame about the original recipient though.

Afghan (1) Kandahar (Maj. G.W. Willock. 3. Bl. C.);
QSA (3) Cape Colony, Orange Free State, Transvaal (Lieut. G.W. Willock. Rl. Dub. Fus.);
KSA (2) (Lieut: G.W. Willock. R. Innis: Fus:).

Major George Woodward Willock is recorded in Shadbolt’s ‘The Afghan Campaigns of 1878-80’ as having served as follows: ‘Major G. W. Willock served with the regiment throughout the campaign, taking part in the action at Shekabad, the march from Kabul to the relief of Kandahar, the reconnaissance of 31 Aug 1880 and the battle of Kandahar…. twice Mentioned in Despatches… (and was) wounded at battle of Kandahar.’

Willock, serving in the 3rd Bengal Cavalry, was one of only two casualties from his regiment at Kandahar, one officer (Willock) and one OR, a sowar (mortally). In ‘The Second Anglo-Afghan War 1878-1880 Casualty Roll’ by Anthony Farrington, Major George Woodward Willock is noted as having been slightly wounded on 31 Aug 1880, Kandahar (pg.97). The Army List Jan-March 1885 shows; Major Willock 20.10.79 Cavalry- Bengal (India Local Forces).
