Thank you IL, Ian et al.

I had the information pertaining to his shipping arrangements but it is good to have it confirmed. Having acquired the medal from the Rosenbaum's at Liverpool Medals, I was familiar with what they had posted on their website.

The question nobody appears able to answer is on what roll does his SA 1901 clasp appear, or was it self-awarded?

Regards

Rory

Rory,
this may be irrelevant to your man, but I've recently learned that infantrymen who could ride were 'pinched' for mounted infantry work. For example, in the Natal Field Force on the Upper Tugela, Colonel Dundonald's Mounted Brigade included (in a force of about 1500 mounted men):
1 Section Royal Dublin Fusiliers
1 Section 2nd Kings Royal Rifle Corps
Rob
The past is not dead. In fact, it's not even past.

I find the whole Mounted Infantry system quite interesting. I don't know when the system began, but I have found that before the Boer War some British soldiers were selected for mounted infantry training and were given a certificate on completion. I have read a diary of a Reservist who mentions that all with a certificate were immediately sent to South Africa as Mounted Infantry. All regiments supplied men.
I have just found this book.
