These medals are on their way to me. Kommandant Stephanus (Johannes) Oosthuizen served with the Pretoria Commando under General Kemp and General Beyers in the battles and skirmishes of Dundee, all those around Ladysmith, Warmbaths, Selous River, Vlakfontein, Stompies, Driefontein, Twee Rivieren and Kafferkraal. He was twice Wounded in Action before being Killed in Action at Kleinfontein/Driefontein on 24 October 1901.

What makes an already special group more desirable is that it is almost unique for a man KIA to have been awarded the LvW. He was mentioned in a Top Secret British Intelligence Report in 1901.

His daughter claimed his medals posthumously in 1922. The applications were accompanied by a personal recommendation/confirmation of his actions by General Kemp.

I am looking forward to researching this chap. If anyone has any information on Oosthuizen's activities I would be very pleased to hear from you.

These medals have now reached me and the research has begun in earnest. The attachment below comes from Oosthuizen's application for a Wound Riband, I need assistance deciphering this please.

I read it as:

- Schouwer wond (Shoulder wound)
- Hand wond (Hand wound) and
- Sneuwelde (dead/deceased)

Is this correct?

Oosthuizen is mentioned in Jan C.G. Kemp, Vir Vryheid en vir Reg. South Africa: Nasionale Pers, 1941 p278 as helping pick out the location of the Boer trenches on Tabanyama. I thought they were both with the Krugersdorp Cdo. at that time (Jan 1900) - was I mistaken?

Thanks Rob - did you get that from the pages Henk scanned for you? Do you have the book now? There were 2 Kommandant Oosthuizen's - one with the Krugersdorp Commando and the other with the Pretoria Commando. My guess is that Kemp is referring to the Kdorp one.
