He did look a safe bet so it is very good that you continued looking.

He was not in SA in 1899 or early 1900 according to his clasp entitlement so is it possible he completed the census in England and then went to SA? The census was on 31 March 1901.

Rory - the shipping records ( www.angloboerwar.com/other-information/86-shipping-records ) may say if there was a draft of the West Yorks sailing at this time.

I went down that rabbit hole as well Dave. I thought that was him as well but the Register of Effects has his father as Alfred not John as in this case. Mary was the easy part. He attested in Leeds which is what pointed me in that direction.

Let's see who comes up with him first. I have an idea that Berenice will come to the rescue!

Here's another contender Rory.
He may have been named after his Father??

Thanks Sturgy and Dave - quick question - is that a "T" or an "F" next to "Alfred" in the Effects Register? This could open up a whole new line of enquiry as the Thin Blue Line would say.
