Queens South Africa Medal with two clasps TRANSVAAL, SOUTH AFRICA 1901, impressed named 5907 PTE E. HUTCHINSON. W. YORK. REGT.

Private Edward Hutchinson unfortunately died of disease (dysentery) at Wakkerstroom, on 13/4/1901.
His name appears on the medal rolls as E Hutchinson and died on 13/3/1901, but D Hutchinson in the newspaper article 13/4/1901 and again as E Hutchinson in the soldiers’ effects books. The service numbers and date of death all match despite the "typo" in the initial of Hutchinson's first name. Oddly he is listed a "J" Hutchinson on the Duncombe Park Memorial in York. The memorial in Wakkerstroom has his first initial as "D". So sadly, poor Pte. Hutchinson; although memorialized, has an alphabet soup of first initials.

Hutchinson D 5907 Private Died of disease. Wakkerstroom, 13 April 1901
2nd Battalion.

Died from accidental gunshot.

QSA: RoK, Par, Dr, Tr - 4571 Pte. A. Venamore. W. Riding Regt.
Entitled to SA01 clasp. Not entitled to KSA.

A 5-clasp medal to the Regiment is rare with only 34 other ranks receiving this bar combination and a single award of the QSA.
VENAMORE is listed on the SOUTH AFRICAN CASUALTY ROLL as being wounded at WATERVAL on 18th July 1901 and in the remarks column it shows he DIED on the 6th August 1901 – shot accidentally

Venamore A 4571 Private 1st Battalion
Demise: Died of injuries 06 Aug 1901
Place: Waterval + Pretoria

It’s always good to see a QSA and YT together. It’s interesting to know, and I’m glad to see that Yorkshire Tribute medals were given to the next-of-kin when the recipient had died. Thanks for posting.
