Today's arrival was most welcome as I did not have this combination in the collection.

Medals are to William Russell Barnard, an Islington man who enlisted in the C.I.V. (any idea where their papers are?), returned home when they were disbanded and came out to SA again with the 94th Coy. 24th Imperial Yeomanry (Metropolitan Mounted Rifles) - he was slightly wounded near Windsorton Road, north of Kimberley, on 13 August 1901 but saw out the war.

A Territorial man, he continued on with the 1/11th London Regiment (Finsbury Rifles) and was with them in Gallipoli, being Wounded in Action at the seminal engagement of Suvla Bay on 21 August 1915. (August seems to have been a bad month for him). That was the end of his war and his terms of engagement having ended in 1916, he never returned to the front but did enlist with the RFC/RAF as a Fitter in 1917. His Territorial Efficiency Medal was awarded to him in 1916.

Obviously proud of his IY service, and wanting the world to know it, he added his service there on the rim of the QSA.

- Queens South Africa Medal (CC/OFS/TVL/SA01/02) to D33 PTE. W.R. BARNARD, C.I.V. - 30638 + 24TH I.Y. M.M.R. added by recipient, (original naming crisp and unaffected)
- 1914/1915 Star to 280 SJT W.R. BARNARD, 11-LOND.R.
- British War Medal to 280 SJT W.R. BARNARD, 11-LOND.R.
- Victory Medal to 280 SJT W.R. BARNARD, 11-LOND.R.
- Territorial Efficiency Medal (GV) to 280 CPL. W.R. BARNARD 11/LONDON REGT.

Lot's of information on Ancestry etc. but I would like to know if there is anything significant about the D33 number on the QSA?

Regards

Rory

Rory,

Sadly, the attestation papers of the City Imperial Volunteers were destroyed when the Guildhall took a direct hit during the Blitz.

As Neville has pointed out...unfortunately no CIV attestation papers. You may sometimes stumble across them if they have been put in other files such as if the guy subsequently became an officer.

D33 indicates that he was part of the CIV draft (reinforcements) that were sent out later in 1900 to make up numbers. Barnard was listed as part of the 21st Middlesex Rifle Volunteers (the Finsbury Rifles) detachment - the 21st was headquartered at Penton Street, Pentonville, North London.

Here is a photograph of the members of the 21st Middlesex and 1st Tower Hamlets R.V. who made up part of the CIV Draft.

Unfortunately they are not named, but Barnard is almost certainly in there somewhere.

Earlier this year, in an effort to find a photograph of my only other CIV recipient, Lt. Peter Croft (which I know exists there), I made a trip to the LMA but the sheer weight of what was on offer, combined with my obvious inability to manipulate their online "search" facility, left me humbled and defeated. There was one helpful soul who did try to assist but we were approaching the matter from two vastly different standpoints and the result was unsatisfactory for both of us. I left somewhat bemused and bewildered - certainly none the wiser.

The last medal is an EVIIR Territorial Force Efficiency medal TFEM. and was awarded in 1910 (on MIC)
