TOPIC:

The existence of these tribute medals named to men who served with units other than the Yorkshire Companies of the 3rd IY (9th, 11th, 109th, 111th, and 66th) has been often noted but not explained as far as I know. I thought it might be of value to start a list those known examples and look for common factors. I do not know of any complete roll of recipients or how they were selected. They seem to have all expressed a preference for a Yorkshire Company at attestation in Doncaster, although they were subsequently allocated to other non-Yorkshire Companies probably in South Africa, and in some cases via the Base Depot Company. I think the list of recipients must have been drawn up from the Doncaster records. I wonder if these still exist somewhere.....
