GAB, Steve Watt in his casualty roll 'In Memoriam ' merely states Modderfontein as his place of interment. No monument or memorial is mentioned. This may suggest that he was buried where he fell and perhaps never reinterred?
Cheers Steve

Poor Borley,no known grave,I cant find him on any of the birth records either. Hastily burried in the middle of nowhere and death details poorly descibed in the press. Thanks all for your help.GAB

GAB - It might be worth contacting The Royal Lancers Museum in Derby. They cover the history of the 9th & 12th Lancers who were amalgamated at some time.

Just had a look at their website and they have a whole load of photo albums which you can view the pages on line. In one captioned "Photograph album embossed on cover with crest of 12th Lancers covering activities from 1895-1930" I found this:

R Borley is seventh down in the left column of the Privates. Sorry about the quality but it would have cost me £5.50 to obtain a better quality image.

Also it does not make it clear where this is to be found, in fact it seems to say Sebastopol !?!?!

But as you can see R Borley is not totally forgotten or un-commemorated.

Based on this newspaper clipping from the Nottingham Evening Post of 26 October 1904:

It would appear the memorial was unveiled in Aldershot on 25 October 1904.

The church, built in 1863, still stands (but has been renovated) and is now known as the Royal Garrison Church of All Saints, found on the Farnborough Road. As you might expect the internal walls and grounds bear many war related memorials but I can find no mention of the 12th Lancers Boer War Memorial. As far as I can tell, no Forummer has posted anything about it.
