Good Evening Everyone......

Just looking at this on our favorite auction site.....

I have one of these but it was made up by the Master of the Mint.....

I don't like the look of the bars.....

What is your opinion.....

Mike, certainly a lovely collectors item but I agree some of the clasps look a little lopsided. I don't know if that is because of the poorish photos or if they are really mounted very badly. I guess it would be a "nice-to-have" but for me personally I'll probably pass on this one. That feeling may be because I'm feeling a little guilty over how carried away I've been on "our favourite auction site" this month; literature not medals this time.

Cheers,

Mark

Unlike your example, this one was clearly not made up by the Master of the Mint. Some of the clasps seem to me to be "tailor's copies", so I suppose a collector took a named QSA and added the required number of clasps from whatever came to hand. If this was done a long time ago, it was probably cheap and easy to assemble. Given the price and rarity of some clasps today, it would be an expensive and time-consuming task to complete.

If this item is sold cheaply, it could be a bargain simply as a source of clasps.

Regards
Brett

Hello Mike,
Had a look at the link and I don't like it, I agree with Brett, this is just a made up example and not a very good one! The photo's are very poor as well, as is the condition, not fond of ebay to be honest.
I do not have an example like yours and I think from memory, I have only seen one that I would have been willing to buy and that was in a London sale room quite a few years ago now, it went for a lot of money too!
A well known dealer here did have one, again a few years ago now and my first impressions were good, but, on looking at it both the Mafeking clasps were wrong so I stayed well clear!
King regards Frank
