One brief follow-up question, which I would welcome your views on

In the course of 2 years, George Wells seems to have progressed from Private to Orderly Room Sergeant Major.

Was such a rise up the ranks fairly common in this period, in particular amongst the Colonials serving in the Boer War, or is George Wells' promotion notable in itself?

Percy,
Promotions did take place amongst the Colonials, this was a new sort of war for a new century, enlisted ranks recieved commisions at a rate that was unheard of before.
