Frank,
Looking forward to seeing your contribution, hopefully this can become a very interesting thread.

Paul :)

I am very conscious of not having made a contribution to you Imperial Yeomanry post, I must do somthing about that.
I regret that I have already put my very first QSA, which I bought as a boy, on the forum last year in Mr Hendey's Natal Carbineers post, after being provoked by Rory who made fun of the fact I'm the only person in the world who does not have a medal to the Natal Carbineers, so you will forgive me if I go away and have a think about what to add here, I'm thinking perhaps my first medal to an Australian or perhaps a Kiwi Rough Rider! :woohoo: I suspect Stephen would approve of this latter!

Hello David,
Thank you for your comment, yes I am afraid my savings have vanished but it has been well worth it!
That was also a reason for the thread, to hear members experiences about early purchases.

Regards
Paul :)

djb wrote: A very interesting thread Paul. Your collection has certainly grown apace in the last two years!

I can't actually remember my first QSA as it was probably purchased by my brother in the early 1970s. Not quite as far back as Mike's but still a long time ago. I am sure this first medal was sold in part exchange for something slightly better to take its place in the collection, for a while at least.

Best wishes
David

Paul,

Rather than vanishing savings, I hope your redirection of funds will prove to be a wise investment for the future. Medal prices show little sign of abating?

I was trying to think back to why my brother and I decided to focus on the QSA. Up to that point, we had medals ranging from the Crimea to Northern Ireland which demonstrated a somewhat scattergun approach.

I think it was after a visit to South Africa in the 80s that these other collecting themes were abandoned and focus became centred on the QSA, not a decision that was ever regretted.

Kind regards
David

David,
A very good point

I just dread the day if I ever need to start selling my collection, although I do realise they are a good investment I do think of them "for keeps"
Although one day the time will surely come.................. :( :(

Have you seen those tables listing the most traumatic events in life? None I have seen to date include that very traumatic event which is parting with a medal when it is not a part exchange. Now that can be traumatic!
