QSA (4) Cape Colony, Elandslaagte, Defence of Ladysmith, Transvaal (565 Tpr. J. B. Walker. Imp: Lt: Horse.)

James (Noonan's have John) Brownlee Walker was born in Grahamstown, South Africa on 14 June 1877. He enlisted in the Imperial Light Horse at Martizburg on 2 October 1899, and is confirmed on the roll for all four clasps. He was discharged from the Imperial Light Horse on 14 April 1900. He re-enlisted with the number 960 and served 26 September to 15 November 1900.



He died on 20 March 1952.

John Hellier was born in Crazelowman, Tiverton, Devon. He joined the Devonshire Regiment in 1893 and served in India from 1895 to 1899, before fighting the Boers in South Africa from 1899-1902. After a period back in India he returned to England in 1908 and remained in service until 1920 when he was discharged after 26 years 127 days with the Colours

The Regiment was stationed in Ladysmith, South Africa at the start of the Second Anglo Boer War. They fought in the Battle of Elandslaagte on 21 Oct 1899, just NE of Ladysmith and were in the action of Rietfontein on 24 Oct 1900. They were in Ladysmith throughout the siege. They were sent to reinforce Waggon Hill in the great attack on 6 Jan 1900. Private Hewer died from enteric fever (typhoid) at Intombi Hospital, Ladysmith, Natal. He was buried in Intombi cemetery. He is also commemorated on the 5th (Royal Irish) Lancers Boer War memorial plaque in St Patrick's Cathedral, St Patrick's Close, Dublin, Ireland.
