I came across this interesting article in The Times from 1 Sep 1922 discussing the distribution of medals for the Great War. What struck me was the number of Boer War medals still awaiting issue, 35,000, in 1916.

Hi djb
I am new to the ABW site and Forum so please bear with me. Is there anyway of find out which South African War medals went unclaimed?

I recently found out I had a Great, Great Uncle who served in the ABW he was in the 18th Regiment of Foot (Royal Irish Regiment). I would like to include a copy of the medal roll page but each time I try it rejects posting :(

His records show he was posted from India to SA in Feb 1902 and was stationed there until 1905. However I don't understand why he doesn't qualify for the KSA - would be good to know the reasoning behind that decision if anyone can help.

Thanks
Boardman

Hello Boardman and welcome to the forum.

The medal roll is probably being rejected as it is too large in terms of either file size (800 pixels max) or physical file size.

To quality for the KSA, the recipient had to have served for 18 months. It would be more likely that he received the SA02 clasps on his QSA if he only arived there in 1902.

If you would like to give me his number and name I will look him up.

Kind regards
David

Hi David
Thanks for your reply and kind offer to help. His name is Cornelius Lynch and his number is 5591. I am trying to find out if he rec'd his QSA medal or not. If he did I think he may have pawned it and his other service medals during the Great Depression :( The reason behind my thinking is his father's New Zealand war medal (1860-66) is in the Fitzwilliam Museum in Cambridge. The Museum have informed me this medal was bought by an American Banker via a British medal dealer in 1929 - hence I am guest Great, Great Uncle Con sold what he could to put food on the table back then.

However any help or advice would be great.

Thanks
Roy

Hi Mike
My Great, Great Cornelius Lunch at the grand old of 47 was Sapper in WW1 out on Mesopotamia - perhaps he applied for a replacement QSA with his WW1 medals. Excuse me for being a tad thick and apologies in advance if my questions is silly one but is the medal you have for sale with the Transvaal and South Africa 1902 bars?
kindest Regards
Roy
