Mike,

An excellent collection.

I was intrigued by the top bar on the medal to Newbigging. It reminded me of the DSO top bar. Is it a mounting device as this was his sole entitlement?

With thanks

Great collection, I once had asperations of collecting a QSA to every battery....started but gave up :blush:

There are just tooooo many, I still have a few but have decided to rather collect to the artillery units closer to home. Hence acquiring the Natal Naval Volunteers QSA on the last City Coins auction. Another rare medal which I will post in the DOL section is to the Natal Vol Hotchkiss Battery, only numbered +-25 altogether, I know someone on this Forum has the OC's medal....would love that one! :)

Good Morning David.....

The top bar on the Newbigging medal is in silver and hallmarked 1903 and is the same design as the DSO.....

He must have put it on himself as: Queens’ Regulations 1881, para 48 which states;

Medals are to be worn in a horizontal line, suspended from a single bar, of which the buckle is not to be seen. The bar is to be placed between the first and second buttons, in Hussar regiments, immediately below the top bar of lace on the left breast.

It is odd to see a person of such a high rank being only entitled to one medal for the whole of his career.....

I am sure that later he would have been given at least an OBE.

Mike,

It is certainly an unusual device, especially for an officer. It brings to mind the suspenders used in some of the mid 19th Century groups.

Kind regards

Brian,

Ah, the Hotchkiss Battery. That has long been on my list too!
