Mike,

S Sharratt is on the roll for the UGRA on WO100/286p89 along with a relative E Sharratt.

From DNW's description, do you think the medal has the name nut no unit?

I agree with you that the research is a vital element of the medal and like you admire the many men in SA who took up arms voluntarily as so many did.

Best wishes
David

Hi David,
I would guess from the description in the DNW catalogue that the Sharratt medal is named the same way as mine to Zunckel ie no rank or unit ( as to a civilian). I havent seen the naming on any medals to the Weston RA or Karkloof RA so cannot say whether the Upper Tugela naming is unique in this regard.
All the best
Mike

The medal roll for the UTRA makes for interesting reading and shows how the RA drew its members from a small pool in the local area.

There are 6 Coventrys, 5 Zunckels, 2 Hortons and 2 Sharratts. 14 family names from the the 25 surnames on the list.

Regards
Davud
