Hello Justin,
Yes, it was, but, in an ideal world, the launch sites should have been hit much harder than they actually were, I have seen the figures some years ago now and they made for a very depressing read!

The wretched things came across in just 20 mininutes, with speeds up to 420 mph, their heights could be anything from tree top level up to 8000 feet, not an easy thing to hit, once you had used up all your cannon, you were left with the only other option of using the wingtip of your main plane and tipping them over, hopfully, to watch it come down into an empty field!

I'm just glad I was not around back in those days, I think perhaps, I should say that every pilot would have been acuity aware of the task he had been given and many used to spend their evenings in London so they all had a vested interest in defending it, you would not wish to see the Kit Kat club destoryed as the Cafe de Paris had been earlier in the war!

I think the mini blitz that started in that awful summer was like a second Battle of Britain, very intense for all involved.
Thank you for reminding me of Wellington Barracks, I must come back down some time!
Kind regards Frank

Many thanks for your interesting posts - that's quite some flying, up to five sorties a day.

Yes, the Chapel was reopened in 1963.

Best wishes,

Justin
