Oh Mike,
I quite forgot to say how much I like the photograph too, a great big moustache, a sturdy Victorian gentleman, moreover, a very curious badge on his field service cap too, almost certainly a very handsome silver example and made by Messr's Wade in Pietermaritzburg.
I agree with Brett regarding the rosette , not sure about the ribbon on the medals though! perhaps we should consult Ian!

It just occured to me that I have been instrumental in not showing the exact official entitlement regarding the clasp and why the published rolls are in error.

Look at the two vertical columns in the middle of the page here, on the left, the 1897 medal, on the right, the 1897 clasp.



Now then, the bottom one here is your man, the "do" in the left column, is for an medal and not a clasp, the annotation above refers to Herbert Remmer and not your man.
Remmer was also originally shown with a medal and not the clasp which he actually received, his entitlement to the medal has been crossed out, but, as you can see, this was not the case with your man.
