It is great that you have the miniature and full size medal.

The SS Kent was owned by the Federal line and was transport ship number 85.

Looking at the shipping records on this site, it seems the Kent only made two journeys during the Boer War.

The first to deliver the NSW Lancers from Sydney to South Africa, departing 28 October 1899 and arriving 6 Dec 1899. The transport consisting of 3 officers and 37 men of the Lancers, 6 officers and 80 men of the Medical Corps, 4 special service officers and 189 horses.

She next appears in Feb 1900.

8 Feb 00 Departed Albert Docks carrying four Companies I Y, numbering 22 officers, 468 men and 338 horses embarked today in the Kent (5,464 tons)

17 Feb. Arrived Las Palmas. Departed 19 Feb. Arrived Cape Town 6 Mar 00.

From his Seaman's Discharge papers, I only knew the following:
1899 - (May to Dec) – SS Kent – 2nd Refrigeration Engineer – US + Australia –
1900 – (Feb to Aug) – SS Kent – 2nd Engineer – South Africa + Australia
