Could the chap holding the rifle be Scandinavian? His flat cap seems to make him stand out from his slouch/felt hat wearing comrades. Perhaps he brought his own firearm to the theatre of war?

I also note that the four men on the right-front all appear to have Mauser Carbines, which were rare compared to the Standard Mauser Long Rifle (7000 carbines were imported into the ZAR vs 30 000 Mauser Long Rifles). I understood the carbine was issued to the ZARP & Artillerie troops, but these men appear to be standard commando members.
