The picture captioned as the captured train at Kraaipan appears in several publications but I continue to be skeptical that this is correct because of the geography and also the configuration of the train.

But this then raises another question about where the photo was taken if it was not Kraaipan?

The train was marooned between Vryburg and Mafeking in Boer-held territory so it could be that the train was moved at some point in the weeks after the incident and the photo restaged.

I plan to go to Kraaioan when I next visit SA so will try to answer the question about the geography at least.

The first picture posted by Dave is another artists's impression of the incident. The truck containing the soldiers was fabricated in Mafeking and used horizontal rails fastened to the sides as its main protection.
