'In Durban there was great delight at the news that Ladysmith had been relieved. The whole town and the shipping in the harbour were ablaze with bunting, the bells were ringing, and guns firing from the warships at the outer anchorage. All business was suspended, the croeds winging 'God save the Queen' and various patriotic airs. The Deputy Mayor, Mr Brown, called a mass meeting during the afternoon of the 1st inst when a thousand persons gathered round the Queen's statue. The meeting was most enthusiastic and Sir John Robinson was among the speakers.'
