Hello Adrian

I recently resolved Trenanfontein/Treurfontein for an action in 1900.

But for the 1902 action we need some confirmation.

There is also a Treurfontein in North-West Province - it was the previous name of the town of Coligny. There is a farm of this name near there too. There was military action here in September 1900.

Watt lists those killed on 21-01-1902 as Treurfontein, and one (RW Alderson IY) also has the Remark "Lilydale A24". There is a Lilydale in NWP close to Treurfontein.

I haven't looked for battle reports for the 1902 action. The location of the 1900 action is identified in a pamphlet called "With Lord Methuen's Column" (1901).

Google Earth doesn't know either Treurfontein unfortunately.

Hi Adrian,
Can you give "Jacob" a message from me please, ask him to stop changing the names of places, while he sorts the country out, it gets very confusing, I see that there was a interesting looking cemetry at Machododorp, or is it eNtokozweni now. :(
Regards Frank

I can tell you that in the casualty rolls the place is named Trenanfontein however, the place is actually Truerfontein which is near Machadodorp in the Province of Mpumalanga.

HAHAHAHHA

Frank,

I won't waste my time with "Jacob". These name changes are only important to some of the population, for me personally the names will always be those of the good old days.

Sounds rather hectic coming from a Brit that served for 6 years in the SAAF from 79 to 85!!! (Those where the days)

Hello Meurig,

Good to hear from you.

Meurig you might be on to something here. I will do some digging and see what I can come up with. I travel to the NWP from time to time as the wife's family life in Rustenburg.

Cheers

Many thanks to all for pursuing this.

I'll clarify that although "severely wounded", he (L/Cpl. Frank Forsdike (25318)) survived.

Alas he was to lose his life in WW1, outside Ypres in June 1916, with the 4th Canadian Mounted Rifles.

Please keep me in the loop on any developments as to which Treurfontein his was, although from what was being said, and given the date of his wounding, the Machadodorp / eNtokozweni is most likely?
