No. 2 Redoubt, Kimberley Mine, showing men of "M" Company Kimberley Town Guard and two of the Diamond Field Artillery's Armstrong 7-pdr RML guns (on "Kaffrarian" field carriages).

SEE ALSO: Armstrong 7-pdr (200 lb) Mark IV RML (mounted on Kaffrarian Field Carriage) and Armstrong 7-pdr (200 lb) Mark IV RML

A seven-man D.F.A. gun team operating one of the corps' six 7-pdr RML guns (five with the gun; two with the limber). It seems that some members of "M" Company Kimberley Town Guard were merely young boys. Did they, like their fathers, receive QSAs with DoK clasps for their roll in the defence of the town?.

Below are two photographs of "Long Cecil", which was positioned on the north side of No. 2 Redoubt (marked as Big Gun Positions on the map above).

View of Kimberley from the Rock Shaft headgear, together with map and aerial photograph showing the approximate field of view.

Note that this photograph must have been taken some time before the siege, as the "Conning Tower" headgear (left of centre) is of a different, shorter construction to that seen in 1899-1900 images.

.From the album of Emilie Chamberlain (niece of Joseph Chamberlain).

Aerial photograph, showing the field of view and (very) approximate location of the Conning Tower.
Apart from the east-west Old De Beers Road, the modern street layout is barely recognisable when compared to the Official History map. This is not helped by the poor quality of the latter survey. O'Meara's Map (see below) is more accurate.
