I came across a headstone in Preston Cemetery and one of the inscriptions on it is of David Marr "who was killed in action near Boeman's Kop, May 6th 1901, aged 24 years."

Where was Boeman's Kop? I can't find any reference to it online.

Good afternoon,
David Marr was a Private in the 17th Lancers, the famous "Death or Glory Boys" Churchill had a cousin who was killed with them later the same year, Marr certainly lived up to their "motto" and Boeman's Kop actually Bushman's Kop was near Springfontein.
Kind regards Frank

Thanks very much, Frank. Nice to have his rank and regiment to add to the photo.

A pleasure, his number was 4181, the nearest place worth a mention would be Norvalspont just over to the southwest, Boers with De Wet and others were very active in the area at that point in time

Berenice

A minor point to account for the spelling mistake on the headstone ......

The Dutch (later Afrikaans) spelling of Bushman's Kop is Bosman's Kop, so it was simply a matter of replacing the 's' with an 'e'.

Brett

Dear Brett

I think that should be "Boesman's Kop"

The "s" was omitted on the headstone.

Regards

Rory
