A series of photos were taken of Warren's men leaving Frere camp to march to the upper Tugela on the morning of 10 Jan 1900.
The past is not dead. In fact, it's not even past.

Trestle bridge made by the Royal Engineers. As soon as the British forces were concentrated at the little village of Frere, situated on the Natal Government Railways, further progress beyond that point for the release of Ladysmith was stopped for a time owing to the rails being town up and the bridge destroyed, so that no trains could proceed any further north. The Royal Engineers soon overcame this difficulty by erecting a trestle bridge.

The above illustration shows what havoc has been made by the Boers of this fine bridge.

This photograph by Benjamin W. Caney, Durban, gives a good impression of the hustle and bustle of Buller's camp at Frere. The remains of Frere Railway Bridge are just visible in the middle distance on the right.

Captioned "Transport, Frere".
