I had imagined they deflated, moved and then reflated the balloons, much as they do today. The practicalities of transporting inflated balloons must have been very challenging.

Indeed, but, not to grasp and embrace the basic concept and clear advantage of aerial reconnaissance, was, in my opinion, at least, nothing short of appalling, in particular, those final few week of peace, before the world went mad in August 1914.

The Guards marching past Lord Roberts on his entry into Kroonstad

When Lord Roberts made his official entry into Kroonstad there was a very impressive ceremony. The Field Marshal, with a bodyguard of Colonials and his staff, rode in at the head of General Pole-Carew's Division. They took their stand in the Market Square, and the whole of the infantry and artillery filed past. As Lord Roberts took up his position the Union Jack floated out over the Court-house, and the assembled crowd cheered vociferously. The Dutch stood aloof, much impressed by the spectacle of so many troops. The infantry had marched 17 miles, yet the Guards went swinging past in fine style to the accompaniment if the drums and the fifes, proud of this fulfilment of Lord Roberts' promise, made after the entry in Bloemfontein, to march at their head int the next capital he occupied.

Valsch River Bridge, Kroonstad, undergoing repairs

This fine bridge shared the fate of all the others in the Free State. A very long railway deviation was made necessary in consequence, the banks of the river being very high.
