There has been a report that in South Africa the tourism and leisure industries are now bigger earners than agriculture and mining combined. They have the potential to grow, whereas the other two do not. It remains to be seen if manifestations of Colonial history, including battlefields, are given the credit they deserve by people in high places.

For those who have not already seen it, the link below is to an article by Sir Max Hastings, who evidently enjoyed his recent visit to South Africa. It is a pity he left out Boer War battlefields, but at least he had visited some in times gone by.

quite a nice article there, despite not visiting the ABW sites, but he doesn't pull any punches, eg. his statement "The institutionalised corruption of President Zuma and the ANC party pose a major threat to South Africa’s stability and prosperity."
