Thanks so much Adrian Rory and Frank and all for your swift responses and help with this. Having done genealogy research for many years I know that most family stories have some truth in them, even if very small.
Which leads me to the question or assumption that maybe by my Harry Roberts working for the British run railways, he angered his Boer in laws?
One additional thing I know.....which may or may not help....as a teenager he was kidnapped (they called it Shang'hied) in San Francisco after running away from home to find adventure. He supposedly became a cook aboard ships and that's how he wound up in South Africa.
Rory, he could very easily an "unsavory character" having spent several years at sea. Would be interested if the police or arrest records you mentioned could yield any information regarding the arrestee or where he worked, etc..
Again, thanks to all!!!
Brian

A quick line about the Harry Roberts who served in the Cape Police.

Adrian,
Thanks for your efforts ! I found this forum doing research and have been blown away by all the quick replies and help.
My Harry Roberts was born in Illinois, but with him being a runaway from home type guy, maybe he lied about his birthplace. Who knows. At this point I am pursuing any and all leads. Thanks!

Hello Brian,

As a final bit to the story of this chap.

His paper shows that he had only been in SA for 1 week when he attested into the CP in Kimberley on the 14th June 1900. He states that his occupation was that of Station Manager and that he was American National. He was 28 years old. He also mentions a second Christian name of Hutchinson.

No NOK mentioned.
