..catching up on thread, again The Register has an entry for J McKenny 971 Robert's Horse, JMR & Canadian Scouts.

The biography I wrote which also uses WO126 for Robert's Horse that states under "Cases of gallantry, good work, wounds..": "Leukopp? At the time Col Creer was shot."

"Col Creer" is Cpt RP Brasier-Creagh, Roberts Horse - mortally wounded 23-04-1900.

And I see Abbot has him under "Chadwick, J McK" - which corresponds to the references in HA.

Family have arrived....

Hi Meurig

I'm with you until you say Abbott has him listed as Chadwick.

I do not see the link between them. Mainly Chadwick and McKenny both appear seperately on the Roberts Horse roll, and there is quite a bit of background published on Chadwick which points to him being an American, not the Australian that McKenny seems to be.

What am I not seeing?

Hello Ryan

They are separate men; with all available evidence one got a DCM the other a scarf.

I can't explain the name "Chadwick" in connection with 971 J McKenny - a clerical error?

With some help from Bill Woolmore I have found them both:

L Chadwick in Robert's despatches of 31 March 1900, and J McK Chadwick in Kitchener's despatches of 8 March 1902.

I don't know why they seem to have been merged, probably clerical error.

But the QSA roll with DCM on it, and the existence of a physical DCM, and the LG entry with an slightly garbled name, and the little citation Meurig found, makes me think it is okay.

Just picked up on this thread.
i would have to concur that they are 2 distinct individuals. There is a possibility that the mix up was blurred by the fact that medals to both were undeliverable, and returned to south Africa for distribution, lumped together and there you have the mix up.

Chadwick's scarf is 1 of the 2 missing, also of note was he was a recipient of the CMH which just goes to show his gallantry was not limited to the ABW.
