My apologies for taking so long to thank you for your response. I haven't been on line for a while.

What you say is very interesting. Do you know if there is a listing of the members of Potgeiter's commando and, if so, where I might get sight of it?

I still find it interesting that there does not seem to be a record of Smakman in ZAR at this time. Do you know if it was a practice for many of the foreign (non-British) forces to keep their names hidden?

An interesting incident of a boer shooting was the post-war trial, conviction and execution of Salmon van As for allegedly killing the British captain Miers who approached van As' commando carrying a truce flag.

Apparently van As and two others were excluded from the amnesty given to the boers after the war at the treaty of Vereeniging.
