Is there any list of service members by service number? I an interested in finding out if the service personnel above and below my grandfather's ser. # were from the same town. If there is how do I access that list! :)

The British Army service numbers at the time of the Anglo Boer War were actually issued by the particular corps/regiments concerned, so if you ever encounter that, it can only be coincidental and nothing more whatsoever, men who joined the Corps of Lancers came from across the whole country.

Are you saying that the applications were sent to headquarters and assigned a service number at that time?

Not really sure what you mean when you say "applications" once a particular man was found to be fit to join he was simply given a number by his corps/regiment and that number was his unless he transferred to another regiment.
