Wow. Can I just say a very big Thank you. I have gone to the National Archive online records and found the medal roll. The fact my Grandfather was in the Boer War is news to all his descendants. It was totally unknown he spent time in South Africa. It has opened up a whole new avenue of research into his life.

I am in the National Archives today so looked through WO126/44, the attestation papers for CLH/PowLH, but did not locate an attestation for Alfred I'm sorry to say.

Thank you for your help. I'm now looking at passenger lists to figure out when he arrived in South Africa and when he left - no trace yet.
