Militia papers are in WO96 at Kew and are not available on Ancestry, however, the vast majority are available, on line, via FMP, if they are not there, a manual search would be needed, which you could do yourself if you chose to, or you could have someone else do it for you if travel was an issue.

Tom,

His service papers are available online (at cost) via FindMyPast or for free if you visit the National Archives.

The medal rolls show he earned the QSA (5) CC OFS Tr SA01 SA02 for service in the 2nd LNLR. His entry on the KSA roll was cross through as not entitled.

I did not know that you could still obtain Great War medals. How was that process?

You can buy replicate medals. Some people sometimes purchase a medal with the correct clasps that has been erased or choose to buy a medal to someone in the same regiment.

Thanks for your help djb, his WW1 medal index card showed them as returned, and as I'd read of others obtaining such medals, I applied to MOD, and received the claim form, and after a few months, his newly struck medals arrived, leaving me chuffed as little mint balls...hence my project to replace his Boer War awards.
