I have inherited from my father a Queens South Africa medal which, I think, was awarded to my grandfather. It has 5 clasps (Cape Colony, Orange Free State, Transvaal, SA1901, SA1902). It is inscribed on the edge with 610 TPR. A. ROBERTS S.A.C. I know absolutely nothing about him, although I now believe the SAC initials refer to the South Africa Constabulary. If anyone can help me find more information about him I would be very grateful. Thanks.

Graham,

That is a lovely item to inherit. You're correct that the unit is the South African Constabulary.

I would suggest contacting Audrey (details in Contacts in the top menu) as she has been researching the SAC for some time now.

Good luck!
David

Here is his entry from the Reserve Division (RD) of the SAC QSA roll, WO100/271p56.

He is also listed on WO100/271p21 for the HQ Division of the SAC.

The two date clasps on his medal were issued in 1905.

Thanks very much for providing this information. You have now confirmed that my grandfather's first name was Arthur, which I only have a vague recollection of my dad telling me. Why do we never talk to our parents about our ancestry before it's too late? Apart from contacting Audrey, do you have any other suggestions as to organisations I might contact to find out more about his time serving in South Africa?

Graham,

Audrey may be able to track down some personal information on Arthur and perhaps when he changed sections in the SAC.

There is some information here on the SAC which you may find useful. www.angloboerwar.com/unit-information/so...african-constabulary

I would imagine much family history has been lost in the way you describe.
