TOPIC:

At Bromley, London, on Monday night, a coroner's jury found that Henry Benjamin Swiney, gunner, committed suicide by throwing himself in front of a train during temporary insanity. The evidence showed that Swiney was invalided from South Africa and was treated with drink wherever he went, the Coroner remarking that the drink and excitement had brought on delirium tremens. Deceased belonged to the 6th Company Royal Garrison Artillery depot now at Devonport.

On MyHeritage he's shown as being born c.1872, and aged 28 at death.

My invaluable RA CD shows "81633 Gnr. H.B. Swiney, 6th Coy., WD, RGA" as a reservist and invalided 6/00. He received the clasp "Natal" on his QSA medal. A roll marginal note says "committed suicide, 8/9/00".

Thanks, IL. His death was registered at Poplar, London, and he was aged 28 at death. I may order a copy of his death certificate for more detailed information, which might help to locate where he was interred, and who was likely to have received his medal.

Yes, it would be appropriate to see where Gunner. Swiney was interred. The medal roll for 6th WD RGA was signed at Standerton on 12/6/01; so his medal would have been sent to his NoK.
Having a look in Stirling to see what 6WD RGA was doing in Natal prior to June, 1900, I see that in 3/1900 RGA was handed responsibility of a number of big guns formerly used by the Naval Brigade.
Quite a few Natal clasps to his battery - but only a handful of single Natal clasp entitlement. And mainly to those invalided.

He is not in Soldier's Effects. But, his papers survive on FmP.

The burial register gives his last abode as being Goswell Road, E6, which is a long, main road in Clerkenwell, being part of the A1. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Goswell_Road

Someone on Roots Chat, where I've posted a query about him, says "his records show he was treated a lot for contagious gonorrhoea."
