Hi,

I am interested in finding out any information regarding my ancestor william dick, he was with no 2 company of the first contingent which left wellington on the ship waiwera 21/10/1899 and he was part of the NZ mounted rifles.

I would like to find out any details of the campaigns that he would have been involved with.
Many thanks

Hi Wendy, welcome to the ABW Forum. From the clasps on his Queen's South Africa Medal (QSA) you'll be able to identify the major actions he was in. 126 Cpl. William Dick, First Contingent NZMR is shown on the QSA roll as QSA with Paardeberg, Dreifontein, & Relief of Kimberley for battle clasps and then a Transvaal clasp. The Transvaal clasp is a state clasp so he saw general service in the Transvaal but wasn't present at any of the major actions in the Transvaal for which battle clasps were awarded. His medal was issued in Auckland on 12/06/01 so presumably he was back in NZ by that date. It would seem that he saw most of his campaign service in the Cape and OFS.

Cheers,

Mark

Kiaora Wendy,

Welcome & good to hear from another Kiwi on the Forum. My Gt Grandad decided to go direct to Brabants Horse in SA now RSA and have since discovered the Brother in Law was part of the NZMR. All the best with your research and trust you still have Will's medal/s in the family.

Cheers
Stephen

Sadly no, we have no record of where his clasp went, or for that matter his uniform. He did bring back a bead necklace for his youngest sister (Nina Katie) which we do have.

I lived in SA for a while and must have passed places where they fought and never knew that he served there!

Such a shame not to still have these, can we get replacements for these?

Sorry I failed to mention my family connection was John Hogg who was on the same ship that sailed from Wellington on that day for SA. He was part of the the no 1 company, Regt No 14. Small world.

That is a real shame. I collected my GG mounted QSA with photo and narrative today and I have already bolted it to the entry way wall. Very Proud and what a connection to my family/GG.

Yes you can get copies (not the same) but I suggest you ask around in the family if at all possible to discover where the medal/s may be. I was lucky to have this medal passed to me on my Dads passing this year with other family medals. Thats another story.

I had the opportunity to travel through RSA in the late 90's and visited places that came alive knowing the Boer War Story (in part). South Africa is a beautiful place inspite of the friction. I envy that you had the opportunity to live in RSA.

By the way in a round about way our family is from the East Coast (Gisborne) of NZ.
