Thanks, Dave, for this information and apologies for delay in replying, I didn't get an email notification of your reply as I did with the first 2 replies. As you say, I don't think the West Riding Regt man can be my Edgar as he was definitely still at home in Jan 1900 and well settled in the US by 1902. V frustrating.

Thanks too to Pete. I was puzzled by this as the medal roll I have found on Ancestry is definitely for Pte E Priest, 5829. National Archives ref: WO 100; Piece: 168. Image 258. This roll is for South Africa Medal and Clasps issued 1st April 1901. However, having downloaded the Kings SA Medal record from the NA, I see the H Priest you refer to. So maybe conclude that the Queens SA Medal roll has wrong initial. Either way the service number seems to clinch it. Curses! But thanks for saving me from a wild goose chase.
