Berenice.......

I have found a James Hamilton MALLALUE in the list of members of the Royal North West Mounted Police (R.N.W.M.P.) in the Library and Archives Canada web site but his records have not yet been digitized yet.....

Berenice......

1914 attestation papers have James Herbert Mallalue aged 43. Military Mounted Police.
Served in WW1 1914 to 1916. Discharged medically unfit. Rehumitism and Melancholia. 1917.

Additional information on papers.
1 year Strathcona Horse
1 year Imperial Yeomanry
4 / 6 years? R N W M P.
Occupation. Commission Agent.
Father, John
Mother, Hannah Rose
Wife, Mary Alice Howe....They married in 1908 1st January at Manchester Cathedral
His brother was certainly Hiram.
Seems he may have used Hamilton, Herbert and Robert as a middle name.
The 1911 census has him as Poultry farmer living at Abbey Lawn Cowhill Haighton Nr Preston. I think all the clues and details that have been posted, point to the same man....
Although I haven't found a Schoolmaster in the mix....... yet:. ;). Unless Hiram was the Teacher.
I'm wondering if Hiram and James were twins? Both aged 11 recorded in one census.

PS....Mallalieu and Mallilien have been used as a surname.
You only live once, but if you do it right, once is enough.
Best regards,
Dave

Bingo! Great work, Dave, many thanks. I wonder if he also used his father's name, John, sometimes in Canada, which would explain the piece in the press. Family back in Oldham must have wondered "Who's this John Mallalue he's on about? Does he mean James?"

Abbey Lawn is still there, only a house, not a poultry farm. I'll have to take a walk out that way and see it for myself.

The inscription on Hiram Mallalue's gravestone says that he was born on the12th of August 1859, and I've found Hiram's birth registration - someone at the General Register Office seems to have incorrectly transcribed his surname (not the first time I've found something like that in the GRO records).

HIRAM MALLALIEN, birth recorded in the Oldham registration district, third quarter of 1859, mother's maiden name was Greaves.

JAMES HERBERT MALLALUE, birth recorded in the Oldham registration district, second quarter of 1861, mother's maiden name was Greaves.

HIRAM MALLALINE, death recorded in the Oldham registration district, third quarter of 1920, aged 60.

JAMES HERBERT MALLALUE, death recorded in the Fylde registration district, third quarter of 1930, aged 60. The age is out by 10 years.

The Fylde registration district included Blackpool, Fleetwood, Lytham St Annes and Kirkham.
