Hi there
Could I please ask if it’s possible to assist with finding out a military record military force number for J H Hayes (John Henry) Cape Town Gaurd 1903 No28 (Plein Street) Company. He apparently served in the Boer War 1899 - 1902. I have just recently discovered that he served in the Cape - Town Guards.
His daughters baptismal certificate reflects that he was living at the Castle in Cape Town in 1910.I then found another record which states he and the family of 9 children were living at 42 Married Quarters, Wynberg Camp, Cape Town in 1921. I am desperate to find any enrolment records.
Kind regards
Kim Cole

Hi I am also looking for information about my grandfather who I believe served with the Town Guard between 1899 and 1901. I am just wondering if men like him were recruited from the UK to travel out there or whether they went out for different reasons and then joined up. I have so little information. So it is interesting to know that there is someone else out there searching the Town Guard rather than a standard regiment

Hi there
We were wondering exactly the same thing? We do know from our GG that his death certificate says place of birth England but no idea where. I have heard that there are definite conscription records for theses guys from the Town Guard but have no clue where they are. My GG went on to serve at Wynberg Camp.
Here is a transcription from one site I am on
The Cape Town Guard, formed to defend the town, which had been denuded of troops who had been despatched to the front, mustered nearly 10,000 men. Originally formed as a Town Guard of Cape Town during the Second Anglo-Boer War, this regiment was listed as a volunteer unit in 1903 and became the Prince of Wales’s Own Regiment, Cape Peninsula Rifles. The unit was incorporated in the Active Citizen Force in 1913 and disbanded in 1926. The name Cape Peninsula Rifles was adopted in 1941 by the 2nd Battalion, Reserve Brigade, which was dissolved at the end of the Second World War.
Let me see if I can find yours on the site if you give me his name

His name was Samuel Morris. I've got his discharge certificate dated 19.9.01. I now realise he was enrolled for a very short time - from the January to the September. So obviously not a committed army man.! He died 8.04.1909. If you have any links that would be great. Have to go off now on a Zoom course but will log in again soon

I have found his death certificate with his parents names on and his date of marriage and wife’s name. He was born in Wolverhampton. His father was Breslaw Morris and his mother Amelia. He married Sarah Tuchman I think that’s how it’s spelt in 1889 in England. He was a watchmaker and jeweller. He lived at No.23 Prince Street, Cape Town. It also has name of his 2 children.

Thank you! There is only one child - if we are talking about the same Samuel (Sam) Morris. I've got the family info via Ancestry but the address in Cape Town is very exciting!
