That certainly seems to be him! He would have been 40 at the time of his death.
That’s amazing! Thank you!

Hi Dave and Debbi,

I have located on line an image of the final resting place for Sgt. James Knight at Eastern Cape's, King William's Town Main Cemetery.

Thanks again guys for your help, the family were amazed!

I wondered if you knew how I can get hold of James Knights service number, also his son Bertram knight was born in SA but I cannot find any records of his birth, he was 3 mths old on the ships log on their return to england in March 1900, so I think Martha was at the late stages of her pregnancy when James died in sept 1899.
Thanks again.

Hello Debbi

I have had a quick trawl for your G G Grandfather's regimental number, however I didn't have much luck I'm afraid. There is a research centre within the Royal Berkshire museum.
The Rifles Berkshire & Wiltshire Regimental Museum. Telephone 01722 419419.
I believe you can speak to a researcher. They may be able to help as they hold the Royal Berkshire records. I think James would have served in the 2nd Battalion as they were sent to South Africa in February 1898.
With regard to Bertram, I could only find the entry on the 1901 census, which record Mrs Knight (Martha) residing at Number 1 Kent Cottage Stamshaw Road Portsmouth.
She was a shopkeeper and lived there with 3 of her children.
Son Harry aged 4
Son Bertram aged 1
Daughter Martha aged 3.

Please keep the forum posted if you have any luck with Sergeant Knights military history.
I wish you well in your future research. I will have a more in depth look when time permits.

Dave.....
You only live once, but if you do it right, once is enough.
Best regards,
Dave
