David,
Thank you for these details.
I have some sepia photos LHG took in South Africa with hand written dates of 1905 so i assume he was there for approx 3 years from 1902-1905. I am interested in both his work as an army surgeon and his later work with the local population after 1902 in South Africa.
Thanks also for the suggestion about Southampton Uni archives of his sister in law family papers. I had a quick flick through but did not notice anything-but i think it is worth a more methodical look.
Thanks for your help,
Martin

Extract from a downloadable PDF which appears to list all the papers in the collection:

1/4/2 Correspondence of Louis Montagu, later second Baron
Swaythling, to his mother and his brother, from Samuel
Montagu, Ellen Montagu, Edwin Montagu, to and from
J.Irving Courtenay, from Frederick Hendricks and Dr Leslie
Haden Guest. 1891-1911

are there passenger records in early 1900 for army personnel including doctors travelling to South Africa from UK. i am trying to pin point the date LHG departed UK for South Africa and whether this was after Emily Hobhouse published her findings about the British concentration camps after her visit there.
thanks
Martin

i wondered where you found the RAMC record dated 1904. i have a similar record dated 1903 which i found on line, but i could not find the 1904 record.
i know of the blue plaque in Chelsea, but not the memorial in Essex church. when i searched the church in Swayling there was no obvious mention of it. and i dont know what his connection with Swayling was.
any more information much appreciated.
thanks,
Martin.

Martin - you wrote "When I searched the church in Swayling there was no obvious mention of it. and I don't know what his connection with Swayling was.Any more information much appreciated."

Can't find a place called Swayling and I presume you meant "Swaythling" which is now a suburb of Southampton. Gladys Swaythling, whose personal papers are now held by Southampton University, started out life as Gladys Goldsmid and was the sister of Muriel Ethel Carmen Goldsmid who was Leslie Haden Guests's second wife. They had a son, David Leslie Goldsmid Haden Guest, who, although he had a much shorter life, is in some ways more interesting than his father. According to Wikipedia, he rubbed shoulders with Burgess & McLean and served in the International Brigades during the Spanish Civil War and 4 months after he arrived in Spain was taken out by a sniper whilst reading a newspaper.

How many more of your relations have Wikipedia pages?

Regards, David.
