I'm doing some family research and am trying to find any information on John David Simpson and Frederick William Simpson. They were from the Perthshire area of Scotland. I do know that Frederick William Simpson died in the war. If anyone has any hints on where I should start looking I would be very grateful. I believe the attached photo to be Frederick William Simpson.

Dear Bamboo,

According to 'A Military History of Perthshire 1899-1902' edited by the Marchioness of Tullibardine (1908) Frederick W. Simpson from Longforgan enlisted in Lovat's Scouts in 1901. His Regimental number (Lovat's Scouts were part of the Imperial Yeomanry) is given as 36677.

He served in South Africa 1901-2 and qualified for the Queen's South Africa Medal with clasps 'Cape Colony', 'Orange Free State', 'South Africa 1901' and 'South Africa 1902'.

He died at Maraisburg on April 9, 1902.

Hope this helps,

Justin

Frederick W Simpson has two entries in WO100/130, the QSA and Cape Colony clasp from page 102 and the more interesting page 108, this latter is their supplementary roll and both the South Africa 1901 and 1902 Clasps are shown there as well as "Deceased"

And his enlistment papers in Lovat's Scouts should have survived. These will contain some personal details, including next of kin.

They should be in the WO128 series in The National Archives. I believe they are available online through one of the ancestry type sites.

Justin,

Do you know if there is a muster roll for Perthshire as there is for, say, Angus?

With thanks
David
