I have had a good look through DD7/63 and he is the only Smith to be found with these initials or a combination of them either "J.R" or "R.J" and with the number 2714.

The QSA roll page, as Frank mentioned earlier, has him as 2714 R.J Smith who was discharged medically unfit. This corresponds with the info on the page in DD7/63.

I also had a look through the attestation papers to the CP just for interests sake and the closest there is Joseph John Smith so no match either.

Hello, Frank and Adrian

Thank you very much for the favor of your reply and for taking the time to look into this for me. Regrettably, it does not appear that the gentleman 2714 RJ Smith is the person I am looking for and there appears to be no other Smith's with the name Joseph or initial J in the Cape Rife unit. I see a Smith without a first name/initial listed in the Cape unit as no. 200, QSA (5), but the odds of that being my man are rather remote.

Thanks again for your help, I will keep hunting.

Limerick,

I am afraid you are correct.

This chap with the Regimental number 200 is John Smith who attested at the age of 17 years into the CMR in
Kingwillliam's Town on the 9th Feb 1877. He died on the 7th March 1901 from an abscess of the liver.

This Smith has the Cape of Good Hope General Service medal with the clasp Basutoland and the QSA medal with the clasps, CC, Wepener,Tvl,Wittebergen, and SA 1901.
