Okay Vernette,
So from this and your other thread, are you now suggesting that he left Australia well before the war, in 1895? for whatever the given reason, but, I think it would be very wrong to just assume he served in the war.
If I were you I would start the search for him in Australia and get as much information on him and his family members before even thinking about South Africa.
