3GG is shown in Maurice V1 as leaving UK on 21101899 on transport "Ghoorkha" and arrived at Cape Town on 15111899; forming part of 1st Infantry Brigade. I have a copy of papers re one of the chaps in my collection who was in 3GG (recalled and posted on 09101899) and the date leaving UK agrees with Maurice. No surprise, I guess.
Probably doesn't help much - but there it is.

Dear all,

The 3rd Battalion relieved the 2nd Battalion at Gibraltar in September 1899. They proceeded to South Africa in October on the Goorkha which passed by Gibraltar with 471 reservists on board.

It would seem that your great grandfather returned to the UK with the rear party of the 2nd Battalion. They arrived in SA in April 1900.

Justin

Thanks Justin, that helps me understand his service papers. Can only speculate why he was one of the ones that returned to the UK.
